1) Advocacy Coordinator 

New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) is a community based organization in Jackson Heights Queens dedicated to immigrant workers rights. We organize newly arrived immigrants, primarily day laborers and domestic workers and together we engage in community organizing, grassroots advocacy and leadership development to advance the rights of workers. Our campaigns focus on immigrant workers’ and consumer rights, and immigrant civic engagement.

NICE seeks a qualified candidate for a staff position as an Advocacy Coordinator to help run our campaigns. Over the next year, the main focus of the Advocacy Coordinator will be NICE’s Immigrant Consumer Justice Campaign (ICJC). The ICJC aims to end the substandard, fraudulent and predatory practices of businesses targeting immigrant workers and consumers, specifically two particularly egregious industries: employment agencies and immigration services providers.

The Advocacy Coordinator will be integral in the coordination of a statewide coalition working to combat employment agency fraud through legislative reform to better protect low-wage workers. S/he will also be involved in a statewide working group, co-convened with the New York Immigration Coalition, to develop regulatory, legislative and educational strategies to combat immigration services fraud especially in light of possible immigration reform

The Advocacy Coordinator’s specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate all campaign activities including coalition and working group meetings, community forums, press conferences, meetings with elected officials and meetings with government agencies.
  • Work with coalition partners and NICE staff to develop campaign strategy through research, exploratory meetings, power mapping, etc.
  • Work with NICE members, members of other organizations and other affected persons to develop written and oral testimonies, prepare to talk to the press, prepare to talk to legislators and prepare presentations.
  • Develop written content for the campaign including website content, policy papers and outreach materials.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with coalition and working group partners with include other community organizing groups, advocacy and legal services organizations and labor unions,
  • Maintain records of meetings, campaign progress, contacts, etc.
  • Assist with data entry and other clerical duties as necessary

Qualifications:

  • Experience with issue and/or electoral campaign work.

  • Experience with coalition work preferred.

  • Must have strong writing skills.

  • Must have cultural and linguistic competency to work with low-wage immigrant workers and consumers

  • Must have a strong command of the Spanish language

  • Must feel comfortable working on multiple projects.

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.

2) Organizing Intern

New Immigrant Community Empowerment seeks two organizing interns to play an integral part in our membership development and in our grassroots organizing campaigns. S/he will work alongside our organizers and a dedicated group of members to achieve our campaign and membership development goals.

New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) is a community-based, non-profit organization that works to ensure that new immigrants can build social, political and economic power in their communities and beyond. Our membership is comprised of recently-arrived, low-wage immigrant workers from Latin America who live primarily in Woodside, Jackson Heights, and Corona and work as construction day laborers and domestic workers. We carry out our work through grassroots advocacy, community organizing and leadership development. We also offer a wide range of services to address immigrant workers’ most pressing needs, including rights-based English literacy classes, assistance with non-payment of wages, and workforce development services such as health and safety trainings and job placement.

The responsibilities of the intern include but are not limited to:

  • Help carry street outreach, introducing new immigrant workers to the organization and our services

  • Help develop materials for outreach, such as flyers or palm cards

  • Follow up with new individuals through phone calls and one-on-ones

  • Assist in developing and carrying our leadership development and Know Your Rights trainings and workshops using popular education methodology

  • Assist with data entry and other clerical duties, as necessary

The ideal candidate:

  • Must have cultural and linguistic competency to work with low-wage immigrant workers

  • Must have a strong command of the Spanish language

  • Must commit to working at least 10-15 hours per week

  • Will be detail-oriented and comfortable working on multiple projects

  • Previous outreach and/or organizing experience preferred but not mandatory

This internship is unpaid, but school credit may be arranged.

3) ESOL / ­Know Your Rights Volunteer Teacher

New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) seeks two volunteer teachers to plan and teach our 10-12 week ESOL/Know Your Rights classes in Jackson Heights, Queens. The ESOL/KYR classes aim to help newly arrived, low-wage Latin American immigrants speak and write English confidently while also learning how to navigate systems to better access services and advocate for themselves at work and in their communities. Most of our students work as construction day laborers and domestic workers who live primarily in Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Corona.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach ESOL to adults in a community-based setting
  • Prepare and deliver engaging, learner-centered lessons related to the needs of the workplace
  • Incorporate NICE’s Know Your Rights modules into lessons
  • Integrate reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar, speaking and listening skills into the curriculum
  • Survey and incorporate student goals into coursework for a student-centered, goal-oriented participatory ESOL class
  • Review and track goals and achievements with students, conduct student assessments, and maintain student portfolios documenting progress
  • Maintain attendance records
  • Work closely with NICE’s organizer and program manager to integrate campaign activities as opportunities for learning
  • Regularly communicate with NICE’s program manager for updates
    Schedule: 10 to 12 week commitment, September – December

Day/Time Options:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 – 11:30 AM (10 weeks), or
  • Tuesday and Thursday, 7 – 9:30 pm (10 weeks), or
  • Sunday, 9 am – 12:30 p.m. (12 weeks)

Compensation/class credit: This is a volunteer position. NICE will work with you to apply and secure school credit if it is an option at your institution.
