At the triangle of 69th Street and Grand Avenue in Maspeth, Queens, Ramon Cando officially declared his candidacy for the recently approved NYS Assembly District # 30, which includes Maspeth, Elmhurst, Woodside, and Jackson Heights. He will be competing in the June 28th democratic primary. The incumbent Assemblymember, Brian Barnwell withdrew his candidacy weeks ago.
In his opening remarks Cando stated, “Public Safety is job #1. Every day we hear of shootings, hate crimes and robberies throughout our City and State. Gun violence jeopardizes us all. We saw locally on May 12th a shooting at Maspeth High School. No more excuses and pandering politics. We need a public safety plan to combat crime and keep us safe!”
According to the Hudson Valley Post, Queens was ranked as the 4th most dangerous county in New York State.
In closing Cando added, “While my opponent, in his failed City Council ran as cheerleader for #defundthepolice movement, my commitment to our law enforcement is unwavering. #defundthepolice is a clear and present danger to us all as we see violent crime and hate crimes increasing throughout communities. In Albany, I will promote my Four-Point Plan for A Safer New York.”
Four-Point Plan for A Safer New York
- Repeal Bail Reform (Give judges the power to determine how dangerous defendants are.)
- Increase Funding for Police
- Increase criminal and civil penalties for Gun Traffickers
- Increase Mental Health Services
