Queens Botanical Garden announces the beginning of a new season of Farmers Market Fridays. Every Friday from June 20 to November 21, from 8:30am to 4pm, local residents will be able to buy fresh, local and seasonal produce, grown and sold by New York State farmers. The Farmers Market will be set up on Dahlia Avenue, directly off Main Street, outside the Garden fence.

All over the world, farmers markets are one of the oldest forms of direct marketing by small farmers. These markets promote regional agriculture by providing small family farms the opportunity to sell their locally grown products directly to consumers, ensuring that consumers have access to the freshest, most nutritious locally grown food the region has to offer.
Each week, farmers bring an ample and changing array of their freshly picked fruit, vegetables, herbs and more to the QBG Market, and many people look forward to their weekly visit. Shopping at the farmers market is a great way to meet local farmers and get the freshest and most flavorful produce. Good relationships between farmers and city residents help to support regional agriculture and can revitalize rural communities as well as underutilized urban spaces. QBG’s farmer’s market will host tables from two different farms and, in addition, will be selling produce that was grown on our very own urban farm plot. The market has an E.B.T. (Electronic Benefits Terminal) available for shoppers with SNAP benefits (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called food stamps). The market will also be hosting a public drop-off area for compost-bound vegetable scraps, helping to keep usable waste out of landfills and enriching the soil used for growing new plants.
Anandi Premlall will be the Market Manager. She is the founder of Sustainable Queens (SustyQ) and well known for her support of local food, farming and preservation of green spaces. The Farmers Market at Queens Botanical Garden is managed by Down to Earth Markets, a small business that operates approximately 20 markets in and around NYC. They are a member of the Farmers Market Federation of New York, as well as a certified B Corporation.
