The Scholarship Foundation of the NSA, Inc. awarded more than $120,000 in scholarships to students from local neighborhoods in New York and other areas in the Northeast during an awards ceremony dinner this evening at Fordham University Bronx campus. Each student with a GPA of 3.5 and higher received a $2,000 scholarship; the remaining students each received a scholarship of $1,000.

Applications are distributed by NSA members, who are supermarket owners, within the communities served by their respective stores. The students receiving the scholarships, mostly minorities, are chosen by the NSA Scholarship Selection Committee based on academic achievement, educational potential and financial need.
“The NSA and its members have a strong moral commitment to re-invest thru education in the communities served by our member’s supermarkets. The Scholarship Foundation is the heart of the NSA. I feel especially proud to be a part of this effort and assist these students in achieving their academic and professional goals,” said David Corona, president of the NSA.
With the support of its sponsors, the Scholarship Foundation of the NSA has granted close to Two Million Dollars in educational scholarships since it was incorporated in 1993. The presenting sponsor of this year’s scholarship awards ceremony is Frito Lay. The recent NSA Golf Classic raised most of the funding for the scholarships distributed today; presenting sponsor for that event was Anheuser-Busch, followed by Associated, Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola and Wise Snacks. Additional sponsors included ACE, Altria, Bimbo Bakeries, Café Bustelo, Cibao Meat, Delta Airlines, El Diario, Frito Lay, Goya Foods, Hispanic Indoor Media, Inca Kola, Key Food, Krasdale, MillerCoors, The Nielsen Company, Pepperidge Farm, Porky Products, Popular Community Bank and Snapple.

“We are strongly committed to the education and empowerment of the communities served by our member’s supermarkets. NSA members not only distribute the scholarship applications, but they follow-up with the students and take a personal interest in their success. Education is a priority to the NSA, and that is why we galvanize our vendor community, competitors and all, to contribute to this compelling cause”, said Zulema Wiscovitch, executive director of the NSA.
Celebrating its XXV anniversary this year, the NSA is a trade association that represents the interests of independent supermarket owners in New York and other urban cities throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. Additionally, the association counts on a Florida chapter.
The association has grown dramatically in the last two decades, and currently provides its members hands on representation in both the private and public sectors and advocates for issues that impact on the entire supermarket industry.
Most members are of Hispanic descent, and their stores are predominantly located in minority neighborhoods. Current membership represents approximately 400 supermarkets.
Founded in 1993, the Scholarship Foundation of the NSA is a 501.C3 non-for-profit organization. Its mission is to provide financial support to qualifying students from neighborhoods served by its member supermarkets, thereby increasing the number of college graduates from those areas.
