In addition to the New York premieres of major feature films and documentaries from throughout the Americas, the 1st edition of The Americas Film Festival NY –TAFFNY- organized the 1st Americas Film Festival Short Films competition. On Thursday June 5th, TAFFNY announced The Americas Award Winners during a packed Closing Night Ceremony at the National Museum of American Indian (NMAI). Oslo by Luis Ernesto Doñas (Cuba) won The Americas Award for Best Short Fiction; Best Documentary went to Salvadorian film Jocelyn and El Coyote, Best Experimental Short film to two films Pirapora by Charles Bicalho (Brazil) and Dance Horse by Oscar Frasser (U.S) and Best Animation was awarded to Argentinean film Padre (Father) by Santiago Bou Grasso; while Enseguida Anochece Gonzalo Gerardin and Maria Paula Trocchia (Argentina) and Yo te quiero (I Want You) by Nicolas Conte got Special Jury mentions. The jury included Antonio Tibaldi, Isabel Estrada, Andrea Weiss, Miguel Rueda, Ronald Kopp and Elizabeth RutherfordBest Experimental: Pirapora (Brazil), Dance Horse (U.S)
Best Animation: Padre (Argentina)

A full house attended the Closing Night Ceremony and Awards Presentation, followed by the
New York premiere of Winter in the Blood (U.S.) by Alex and Andrew Smith. Director Alex Smith and actors Chaske Spencer, David Morse, and Julia Jones were there to present the film.
The first edition of The Americas Film Festival of New York took place in various locations of Downtown on June 2-5, 2014, showcasing feature films in fiction and documentary as well as shorts and animations that represent the rich diversity of cultures, languages and stories of the Americas. TAFFNY is a cultural project of the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education of the City College of New York (CUNY), in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, The Cervantes Institute, NY, BMCC, the CCNY Division of Humanities and the Arts, and the CCNY Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership.

TAFFNY represents the rich diversity of the cultures, languages and stories of North America, Central America, and South America along with their associated islands. The festival is a project of the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education of City College of New York (The City University of New York – CUNY).
The Americas Short Film competition is exclusively dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of short-length audiovisual works by emerging filmmakers. The Festival’s competition will showcase films with a maximum length of 15 minutes, and will be both competitive and informative. This year we are looking for films based on Human Rights and Social issues but all creative topics are accepted.
The program of the festival in 2014 will be made up of: The Americas Panorama –both in fiction and Documentary; The Schools Panorama; The Americas Short Film Competition; Special Focus on the works of an invited country and Special Programs. Besides showcasing films, the festival promotes workshops, debates and lectures.
Entries for films for the short film competition are FREE of charge.
Deadline for entries for The Americas Short Films competition is April 5th, 2014.
ENTRY INSTRUCTIONS:
* Genres: Documentary, fiction, animation, experimental
* Foreign Language Films must be subtitled in English
* Films should be no longer than 15 minutes in length, and must have been released during the 24 months prior to the date of the Festival.
* Preview format must be online data, via web link. Please DO NOT send films to be download. DVDs are accepted in the case that you are unable to submit your film online. Preview DVDs should be clearly labeled with the title, running time and contact information (name, phone number, e-mail.)
* The formats for film exhibition will be Blu-ray or Quicktime 1080p H264 .mov .mp4. Other formats may eventually be used and will be analyzed case by case by the festival producers.
* Festival will grant The Americas Prize award in each of the four categories above mentioned. Other prizes may also be awarded by sponsors or partners who may want to highlight and promote the work of emerging filmmakers.
