The Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) is proud to offer its highly successful Home Improvement Contractor Training (HICT) course for free to the Spanish-speaking community this October, thanks to Citi Community Development, the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House (Riis).

A completely bilingual instructor with various years of experience in the construction field will lead workshops that prepare contractors to pass the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) licensing exam. There is a limit of 15 people, and classes will be offered on Oct. 20, 26 and 27 from 10 am to 4 pm at Riis, 10-25 41st Ave. in Long Island City. Participants must attend all three sessions. The class will then go as a group to take the licensing exam at the DCA’s Manhattan office in late October or early November.

This program is aimed at those who were affected by October 2012’s Superstorm Sandy or who are working as home improvement contractors without a license. Due to generous funding from Citi Community Development, SBA and QEDC, the HICT — which usually costs $200 each — will be free. Additionally, Citi Community Development will cover the DCA’s $438 licensing fees for qualified graduates. The only cost HICT clients will have to pay is the $170 business registration fee with the NYS Department of State, Division of Corporations.

HICT clients will need to participate in one-on-one business advisory sessions, to register their business and package their application, as well as receive advice on permits, labor law and access to capital, with qualified QEDC staffers.

QEDC offered its first HICT course in Chinese in January 2012, and all participants passed the DCA exam and obtained licenses to work legally as home-improvement contractors. Since then, about 150 individuals have taken HICT in English and Chinese before passing the DCA exam.

Register at www.queensny.org or call Michael Gillen, who speaks Spanish, at 718-263-0546.

Established in 1977, QEDC has assisted thousands of entrepreneurs in preparing business plans and filing for business registrations, permits, licenses and loan packaging. QEDC has also helped scores of neighborhoods revitalize their commercial districts by creating business organizations and establishing business improvement districts.
