De Novo is a documentary theatrical piece, a true story, crafted from immigration court transcripts, interviews, and letters that recount the harrowing story of Edgar Chocoy. As a 14-year-old, he fled gang violence in Guatemala and traveled over 3,000 miles, through three countries, to the United States in search of his mother. De Novo depicts the plight of “unaccompanied alien minors” held in immigration custody in the U.S. and the fight for justice and asylum.

This initiative is funded by the Natalie Bailey and Herbert J. Kirshner Foundation. The New York Community Trust provides additional funding. Organizational support for this event has been provided by Council Member Daniel Dromm. The Jackson Heights Library has donated space to make this event possible.

This event is made possible in part with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Queens Council on the Arts.
