May Day Rallies for the Working class this Sunday

César Chávez was a leader of the working class in America.

New York Civic Participation Project , Make the Road New York and NICE are going to downtown Manhattan this Sunday to rally in favor of the working class. In Queens, buses are available to take immigrants in the morning to the big labor concentration at Foley Square, near City Hall.

at Foley Square

Immigrant Communities Protest Attacks on Working People, Demand End to Deportations

 

New York, NY – On Sunday, May 1, hundreds of Latino, African and South Asian immigrant community members will board buses stationed in the Bronx, Queens and Washington Heights to join labor unions at Foley Square to protest against anti-worker and anti-immigrant legislation and the mass deportations that are devastating the immigrant community.

 

WHEN: Sunday, May 1st, 11:30 am

Bronx: 928 Intervale Avenue

Queens: 33-50 82nd Street

Washington Heights: 21 Wadsworth Avenue

WHO: Latino and other immigrant community spokespeople will be available to speak with press at departure locations (in English or Spanish).

Immigrant Workers to Celebrate May Day by Confronting Wage Theft throughout NYC  


Scores of Immigrant Workers to Protest Exploitative and Abusive Employers in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island.


 

MAKE THE ROAD NEW YORK

Multiple Latino workers at upscale West Village restaurant “Veranda” are owed $159,000 in stolen wages and tips, damages, and interest.

 

In Staten Island, a dishwasher at Chirag Indian Restaurant was paid just $200 for 70 hours of work each week.

 

In Brooklyn, a worker at Sea Town Fish and Meat Market worked 60 hours a week for less than minimum wage, and w/o receiving legally mandated overtime pay.

 

These workers are protected by NYS’s new Wage Theft Prevention Act, which took effect on 4.9.11, and promotes accountability and lawful treatment for all NY workers.
What: Hundreds of workers will gather in front of each of these businesses to demand lawful treatment of their employees, and to celebrate that workers are now protected against retaliation for demanding lawful treatment by the Wage Theft Prevention Act.

Afterwards, workers will travel by bus to Foley Square to join a citywide May Day protest at 1pm.

Who: Immigrant wage theft victims, attorneys working on their cases or complaints with the NYS Department of Labor, and members of Make the Road New York.
