Sak Tzevul delivers a new brand of virtuosic, progressive rock guided by the band’s founder, Damian Martinez, whose electrifying lyrics, music and compositions, tackle the contemporary urgency of authentic indigenous voices. On a decidedly post-modern quest, Sak Tzevul points to the idealized perfection of humanity and the universal dreams held by all, especially youth audiences from around the globe. Martinez’s earthy and soulful voice is packed with passion of thought and deep feeling. Combined, his musical oeuvre inspires a feeling of liberation and the empowerment of a new generation.
Inspired by ancient myths and codes, Sak Tzevul commemorates and reinterprets native chants and tales through intimate, heartbreaking meditations with an undercurrent of charged rock punctuated with classical inflections. By reaffirming native spirituality, Martinez harnesses the ancestral legacy of his home, Zinancantan, a Tzotzil Mayan village in the mountainous highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. Anchored with the knowledge of his ancestral legacy and traditions, Martinez sustains the energy of his dynamic performances with lyrical and conceptual cohesiveness. Sak Tzevul expands his musical tribute with ecstatic creations hearkening Pink Floyd and other rock luminaries. While tackling huge themes including Mexico’s indigenous and colonial past, and today’s popular and material culture, Martinez, delivers a rich synthesis of complex musical, personal and social ideals with philosophical lyrics sung in Tzotzil and Spanish to weave a lively, stimulating musical experience with a clear message
